Curated by Danniel Rangel, Maria Nepomuceno: Big Bang Boca is a site-specific, multi-element installation by #MariaNepomuceno on view at Instituto Artium de Cultura through November 4.
Composed of materials including ropes, beads, straw, ceramics, clay, wood, and resin, the sculptural works in Big Bang Boca overflow from the interior rooms out to the garden, scaling walls and interacting with the site’s architecture. Vibrantly colored shapes and structures pulsate like living organisms, composed of veins, arteries, and channels of vital energy. The spiral construction, featured often in Nepomuceno’s work, evokes the possibility of constant expansion and the infinite suspension of time.
Nepomuceno says: “The idea of this work follows the other works I developed during the pandemic, in which organisms escaped through the windows. This relationship with the earth reflects a deep desire to be grounded, to reinforce the importance of returning to nature and to expand my symbolic roots through this installation.”
